CAAO's BESTT Going to Africa! http://caao.net/resources/caao-blog/278-caao-bestt-going-to-africa.html http://caao.net/resources/caao-blog/278-caao-bestt-going-to-africa.html My name is Laura Cowan. I’m a community activist, domestic violence advocate and a survivor of domestic violence. I survived one of the most notorious abuse cases in recent California history. My children I was locked up in a garage by my ex-husband, who beat, starved, tortured and raped me in front of my children for a little over 6 months. One day, at a small post office in town; while being escorted there by my captor, I was able to slip a letter of distress to a post office worker. The authorities were contacted and my family and I were freed. Now I have vowed to help victims of domestic violence and have become a strong advocate in my community.

In my journey I got involved with several groups and organizations. One was called “Positive Plus” which was created by Yvonne Pointer, nationally known Cleveland anti-violence activist, author, motivational speaker, and philanthropist who formed Positive Plus in 1985 as a direct result of the tragic event that occurred in her life; which was the 1984 murder of her daughter Gloria. Positive Plus helps individuals to realize their God given abilities so they can rediscover themselves and become whole again. As a result of Positive Plus and Yvonne’s vision, a school in Ghana, West Africa was built in the memory of her daughter called the Gloria Pointer teen Movement Education Center.

My goal is to teach classes as a virtual instructor at the Gloria Pointer Teen Movement International Center on teen dating violence, bullying, healthy relationships, HIV prevention and domestic violence. I will also train other instructors there on the curriculum to educate and bring awareness to the masses. August 7th there Yvonne Pointer and others – including myself, will be flying out to Ghana for the dedication of the Gloria Pointer Teen Movement Education Center. I’m requesting your assistance to help sponsor me to attend mission and become their instructor.

Your contribution of $100, or an amount you can pledge at this time, will go toward my travel to West Ghana Africa which covers lodging, all meals and bottled water, local transportation and much more such as any supplies I would need in the classroom. I really need your support and I appreciate any contribution you can make to help me make this trip to Ghana and to continue my cause of spreading awareness of domestic violence by reaching out to the children in USA and now Africa.  Please take a moment, go this website, read the story and make a contribution today:

Three organizations meet to share information http://caao.net/resources/caao-blog/45-leadership-development/256-three-organizations-meet-to-share-information.html http://caao.net/resources/caao-blog/45-leadership-development/256-three-organizations-meet-to-share-information.html

On February 27, 2015, the Urban League of Greater Cleveland, the Consortium of African American Organizations (CAAO), and the Neighborhood Leadership Institute Alumni Association came together to share information.  This event was a powerful information session.  Many of Cleveland's communities were represented.  Both CAAO and the Urban League shared information about their programs.  Many of the attendees want to do this event again next year and committed to getting involved with the Urban League, CAAO and, and the Neighborhood Leadership Institute. I was very happy to see this.  I was wearing duel hats at this event.  I represented CAAO during its presentation and I am the Co-chair of the Neighborhood Leadership Alumni Committee.

Working in the same building as the Urban League has been a great resource for CAAO.  It has created much collaboration between our organizations.  Organizations in the black community need to figure how collaborate more without feeling threatened.

Cleveland Emerging Leaders Please Apply! http://caao.net/resources/caao-blog/45-leadership-development/236-cleveland-emerging-leaders-please-apply.html http://caao.net/resources/caao-blog/45-leadership-development/236-cleveland-emerging-leaders-please-apply.html Are you:

Looking for those connections to help take your business to the next level?

Looking to understand Cleveland’s treasures and challenges?

Interested in Civic Leadership?

Take action and have impact?

If your answer yes to at least one of the above question, than you should continue reading.  I want to tell you a bit about an organization called Cleveland Bridge Builders (CBB).  I heard about Cleveland Bridge Builders in my third year in Cleveland.  I wasn’t sure Cleveland was the place for me.  It was a complete culture shock.  After talking to a colleague who worked in the same building as me, I decided to give it a try and apply for Cleveland Bridge Builders.  Eleven years later and I am still reaping the benefits of making the decision to apply.

Cleveland Bridge Builders prepares mid-career professionals of all ages for meaningful, fulfilling and impactful engagement in the community. The program provides a unique environment that fosters teamwork, growth and learning to create a transformative experience that promotes and supports participants for a greater role in the community.

I graduated from Cleveland Bridge Builders in 2004 and enjoyed the opportunity to develop my understanding of leadership with a group of individual that came from all sectors of the workforce.  Once I graduated from the program, I wanted to stay connected to the program, so I became a lifetime alum and I joined to board of Cleveland Builders Builders.

Eleven years later I still participate in the programs for alum.  I have had the pleasure of meeting Jack Dorsey, Co-Founder of Twitter and Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman of Google, as a result of staying engaged in the alumni programming.

Cleveland Bridge Builders helped spark my interested in civic engagement that now has me actively working with community programs focused on making Cleveland a better place for all.

Cleveland Bridge Builders is now accepting applications for its next class.  I would encourage you to seriously consider applying.  You can find the application at http://www.cleveleads.org/CBB/Apply  I hope to see you at a future Cleveland Bridge Builders Alumni event.

Combine honesty, integrity, reliability and positive attitude for best results http://caao.net/resources/caao-blog/46-career-development/185-combine-honesty,-integrity,-reliability-and-positive-attitude-for-best-results.html http://caao.net/resources/caao-blog/46-career-development/185-combine-honesty,-integrity,-reliability-and-positive-attitude-for-best-results.html Society today demands a lot from its workforce. Employers value employees who understand and possess a willingness to work hard. Doing more than is expected on the job is a good way to show management that you utilize good time management skills and don’t waste valuable company time attending to personal issues not related to the job.

Recent College Graduate Turns to Entrepreneurship http://caao.net/resources/caao-blog/47-entrepreneurial-development/279-recent-college-graduate-turns-to-enterpreneurship.html http://caao.net/resources/caao-blog/47-entrepreneurial-development/279-recent-college-graduate-turns-to-enterpreneurship.html I want to share with you a great story of a Hiram College graduate Nana Kwamena Takyi-Micah who developed the entrepreurship bug while in school.  When Nana was a toddler growing up in Ghana, he loved to ask his mother several questions while she prepared various dishes such as her delicious peanut butter chicken soup and her famous versatile gourmet sauce. As he grew older, he developed an appetite and a unique passion for food that he decided to enroll in culinary courses by the age of thirteen. After graduating from Ghana Christian International High School, he enrolled into Hiram College and realized he had developed an interest in entrepreneurship. Hence, he was selected to represent his college in the Entrepreneurship Immersion Week, a competition for aspiring entrepreneurs representing schools throughout Ohio. This allowed him to pitch the idea of his mother’s versatile gourmet sauce to a panel of judges. It is a product anyone can use as a salsa, a marinara, a marinade, a cocktail sauce or cooking ingredient for many Ghanaian dishes. Although his team didn’t win the competition, this birthed the idea of Supreme Sauce.

Initially, he did not have the funds to start his business. So he saved up all the allowances his parents sent him as well as picking up three jobs at Hiram College’s campus such as a teaching assistant position, orientation leader and dishwasher. Eventually, he managed to raise about $10,000 which he used to acquire a vehicle, a website, a pallet of sauce, a bar code and a label. Ultimately, Nana’s goal is to share his delicious sauce with all food lovers, vegans and the diverse communities across the country.

After only a few months in the food business, his sauce is now available in over fifteen store locations throughout Ohio. Some of his biggest clients include Zagara’s Marketplace, Krieger’s Health Food Market, Pepper’s Market, Gibb’s Butcher Block and Narrin’s Sauce and Spice in the Westside Market. In the future, he hopes to expand his product line by including a spicier flavor of Supreme Sauce and plantain chips. Outside work, he enjoys inspiring others through the music he writes and inspirational speeches.

CAAO is looking forward to sharing resources and connections to help Nana take his business to the next level.

Showing the Heart of your Business through Philanthropy http://caao.net/resources/caao-blog/47-entrepreneurial-development/174-showing-the-heart-of-your-business-through-philanthropy.html http://caao.net/resources/caao-blog/47-entrepreneurial-development/174-showing-the-heart-of-your-business-through-philanthropy.html Philanthropy has been defined in a broad sense as goodwill to fellow members of the human race in an active effort to promote overall human welfare.  As it pertains to individuals and enterprises of all sizes, philanthropy is described as the practice of giving resources and time to help make life better for other people. Many organizations give because it is “the right thing to do,” but there are benefits that come with truly having a heart for philanthropy. Most people only think of the obvious tax benefits, or other vain reasons to give. However, true philanthropy can create a genuine organizational culture of service, and will place the focus on the community and a vision greater than the business itself.
